Summary

Scottish politics has gone so far down the rabbit hole that Wonderland seems more coherent than Holyrood. Scottish Labour, Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have now emerged as the supermarket champions at the expense of hard-pressed ordinary Scots and thousands of small businesses ("Holyrood's Finance Committee rejects tax on large stores", The Herald, January 20).

If there are organisations that deserve to pay more and can pay more, it is the highly profitable large retail stores. Any of them that can't afford this are on the point of going out of business anyway. The claim that they are a net creator of jobs is highly questionable. Most of retail is a zero sum game. If people spend their money in one shop, they do not spend it in another. If they increase their expenditure in shops, they may reduce it on recreational expenditure. We regularly get misleading figures about the jobs that are going to be created by a new development without any reference to the jobs that are going to be lost as a result. We can see the reality of this on many of our town streets.
