WELSHMAN Sir Howard Stringer will ascend to the top job at Sony, making him the first non-Japanese executive to run the electronics and entertainment giant, it was announced yesterday.

Stringer, a 63-year-old former television journalist from Cardiff, is currently the Japanese conglomerate's head of US operations and vice-chairman of the global group. He will replace Nobuyuki Idei, who has agreed to step down after taking responsibility for slumping earnings during five years at the helm.
