WORLD leaders visit South Sudan today to celebrate independence for the African country, which few thought possible after half a century of civil wars and more than two million dead.

President Salva Kiir will play host at the inauguration in Juba, where the Republic of South Sudan's national anthem has blared from mobile phones all week.
