Summary
THE reason why children no longer go out to play is simply because they no longer have a suitable play environment. The tabloids have fuelled a very profitable fear over child rapists and child murderers but the figures show that the number of such childhood victims has remained remarkably stable, with the vast proportion of danger continuing to be from members of their own family. They now have computer games and video but television has been around for a long time and that didn't stop outside play in the 1950s and 60s.
Blame for the failure of children to play outside does not lie with the parents or with the child but rather with a society that has allowed precious play environments to be destroyed. In the past 10 years in London some 60-per cent of the green space used for housing came from the sale of playing-fields and play areas and this pattern is repeated across the country.See the full content of this document
