CIVIL servants have suggested that they use their own pens and take an hour of unpaid leave every Friday afternoon as ways in which they can do their bit to help reduce the national debt.

Other proposals submitted to the Government included shutting down all of Britain's foreign embassies and turning off the lights in every Government department at night.
