IMPROVED management and ethos of schools is to be the focus of a programme being drawn up between Jack McConnell, the first minister, and Lord Irvine Laidlaw, the Tory funder who wants to contribute some of his fortune to improving Scottish education.

The two visited a project yesterday in Edinburgh, jointly funded by the Scots entrepreneur and the Scottish Executive, which helps children coming out of state care to obtain work experience and build confidence.
