Film producer Ray Stark built his career on the success of Funny Girl and its debutant star, Barbra Streisand, but he was in his seventies and had experienced a run of flops when David Puttnam took over Columbia Pictures in 1986. He told Stark that future backing would depend on each project's individual merits.

That might seem good business sense, but Stark's success had been built on personal contacts, special relationships and loyalty. After all, his breakthrough hit, Funny Girl, had been based on the life of Broadway star, Fanny Brice, who just happened to be his mother-in- law.
