Kevin Stewart stepped off the podium at the Meadowbank Velodrome, around his neck a gold medal for his efforts in the men's sprint at the Scottish Track Championships. There was a spring in his step and a smile on his face.

Twelve months ago, the Dundee-born sprinter was in an entirely different position. Having secured a spot on British Cycling's Olympic Development Programme at the beginning of last year, he was dropped last October because of budget cuts.
