Following our schoolroom howlers this week, a teacher with 40 years experience recalls giving her pupils an extract from Cliff Hanley's Dancing in the Streets to read in which the English teacher is described as "waspish".

The teacher asked her pupils to (a) describe what kind of person Hanley's teacher was and b) describe how you could tell that from the passage. However, the teacher was more than a little aback when she started marking the papers and saw that one pupil had answered (a) he was rubbish and (b) because he waspish.
