ELIOT Spitzer, the New York attorney-general, yesterday filed a lawsuit against the former head of the New York Stock Exchange, Dick Grasso, over what the suit referred to as an "excessive" $188.5m ((pounds) 105.3m) compensation package.

Spitzer also described the process that determined Grasso's compensation as "rigged", and his suit is now seeking to recover more than $100m from the pugnacious former NYSE chairman and chief executive.
