IN his dealings with the media, Martin O'Neill has never used one or two words when 50 will do. The departing Celtic manager has spent the last five years wandering up conversational cul-de-sacs during his press briefings, but his warm endorsement of Gordon Strachan yesterday was unequivocal.

The Ulsterman came alive whenever Strachan's name was mentioned and it seemed that during their lengthy chat on Monday, O'Neill found a kindred spirit. The former Southampton manager will at least bring the same degree of enthusiasm and intensity which has been the hallmark of O'Neill's reign.
