The X Factor programme was watched by an average audience of 9.3 million on Saturday night, while the first of this year's series of Strictly attracted an average of 7.7 million BBC executives were left to ponder their choice of new judging panel for the dance show, from which 66-year-old veteran Arlene Phillips has been dropped and replaced by Alesha Dixon, 30.
