After the last-minute collapse and injury mayhem of Cardiff 24 hours earlier, the last thing Scotland's rugby brethren would have anticipated was Italy beating England in Rome yesterday.

Yet, although the Azzurri were eventually edged out 17-12, despite dominating lengthy parts of the contest and posing a constant threat to the visitors, even when Martin Castrogiovanni was despatched to the sin bin after 58 minutes, there was enough in the Italian display to suggest the Scots will face another massive test of their resources when the teams square up at the Stadio Flaminio on February 27.
