Warmest thanks to Dr Libby Wilson and her friends for coming to the help of a gallant lady who decided after careful thought to bring her life to a dignified and painless end rather than face the "prolonged dwindling" she so feared ("Suicide group in 'old age' euthanasia row", The Herald, April 4).
Critics who claim evidence shows any change in the law making it easier to get help would place pressure on vulnerable people to end their lives should look at the extensive evidence available from the Netherlands, the state of Oregon and other countries in which euthanasia has become legal in carefully defined cases. There is no slippery slope. The number of people seeking euthanasia have declined in recent years. Those who ask for help are not the most vulnerable but wealthier, educated and better insured for medical care people than their fellow citizens.See the full content of this document
