UK retail sales fell unexpectedly last month and mortgage lending growth continued to slow, according to figures yesterday which will add to the growing belief that interest rates have peaked.

National Statistics said retail sales volumes had fallen a seasonally-adjusted 0.4% in October - defying City expectations that they would be unchanged from September.
