THOSE in the book trade put no store in the old saw about swallows heralding the onset of summer. They prefer to go by the Kerching! index, otherwise known as the weekly till receipts. Janet Evanovich has made them very happy already with the release of the latest Stephanie Plum mystery, Eleven on Top. Now the promotion tables are being cleared for Harry Potter.

Both titles will put millions more in the bank accounts of their creators. Nice for them, but for the majority of other writers, still struggling in the foothills of sales, something of a sickener. Now is the summer of the non-millionaire writer's discontent.
