The inner demons of the Ernie Els psyche bubbled to the surface yesterday and at one point looked like destroying the man who for the rest of the week had appeared invincible.

The 34-year-old South African, who opened with a record 12-under- par 60 over Royal Melbourne, blew his eight-shot lead with a horrendous outward nine of six-over-par 42, but recovered with an inward 32 to win the Heineken Classic for the third year in a row by a solitary shot from 23-year-old Australian Adam Scott.
