A GRADUATE tax seems to be the latest odd and inequitable idea emanating from Vince Cable ("Graduate tax idea has merits and anomalies", The Herald, July 16). why the Business Secretary's brief covers higher education is another anomaly.

Graduates may, not surprisingly, earn more on average in their lifetimes than non-graduates. But (a) many graduates do not; (b) there is a huge difference in the earnings potential of different degrees; (c) there is also a huge difference in degree quality between top-rank and other universities; and (d) there are large numbers of non-graduates who earn (or are paid) far more than many graduates - the Sugars and Bannatynes as well as pop stars and sportspersons come to mind.
