FIFTY years ago this weekend, the US Open delivered one of golf's great finales. Arnold Palmer came from seven shots behind with 18 holes to play to win the event for the only time in his career.

Two other men shared the lead in the closing holes at Cherry Hills in Denver: Ben Hogan, for whom almost everyone was rooting, and a 20-year-old amateur called Jack Nicklaus. They were within a stroke of each other with two holes to play.
