IT'S sobering to reflect on the poverty of British influence in the US Open, writes Doug Gillon. It's well documented that Andy Murray's presence last year was the first since Fred Perry in 1936. Perry won the second of backto-back titles in 1934, and beat Don Budge in the 1936 final.
The red-haired Budge later won the US Open twice, and became famous as the first to capture all four grand slam events in a calendar year. Less well known is that his father was Scottish, and made several appearances for Rangers reserves before immigrating to California to aid his respiratory problems. Don's mother was also of Scottish descent, so Scotland can lay claim to one of the game's greatest ever players - his backhand, developed from a lefthanded baseball swing, helped redefine the game.See the full content of this document
