Summary


Last week, Alain de Botton argued for a University of Life in which tertiary learning was less regimented and more relevant to modern life. This is what readers thought.

I studied fine art in the early 1980s, a time when there was far less focus on academic achievement and more on learning about the bigger picture. There were no exams, hours were flexible, there were precious few rules. Self-motivation was the key. We attended lectures not by academics, but by practising artists and writers - people who were passionate about art and the idea of learning about life through its study.
