Bumped up car safety Given the choice between a cheap car and a safe one, most people would opt for safety. One car manufacturer says it would like to make cars that are both safe and inexpensive, but claims that the new European directives, due to come into force in 2007, could make that impossible.
According to Roger Putnam, the head of Ford in Britain, new safety features could force prices up by 25%.
