Joan McAlpine's support for the reintroduction of ID cards attracted predictable opposition from the "usual suspects".

Rather than denouncing any scheme because of its technical imperfections and alleged openness to official abuse, the opponents' case would be more credible if they simply stated their philosophical opposition to the ID concept based on libertarian principles, rather than niggling away at particular details and experiences elsewhere. The logical extension of the ID opponents' stated arguments would be to say that we should have no road speed limits because some people regularly exceed them.
