All at sea

GLASGOW'S former lord provost, Alex Mosson, yesterday opened a new office development, 200 Broomielaw, unveiling a plaque honouring the site's former occupant, the Seamen's Mission. A native of nearby Anderston, Alex recalled the informal maritime job centre opposite the mission, the sailors' pool. On one occasion at the pool, said Alex, redundant Anderston docker Shabba Robertson was transformed overnight into a cruise-ship waiter. On his first day, a fearful Shabba succeeded in ladling out soup to every passenger, but then panicked when faced with serving a more complex second course. In desperation, he bellowed: "Hauns up a' them waants totties."
