As Kara's Flowers, they toured the LA circuit and had minor success with their first album, but then singer Adam Levine realised they were indistinguishable from the next vague indie band. "We were really burned out on how everybody was doing the same thing," he says.

Charting a course influenced by Sly Stone and Stevie Wonder, they tried out their fresh material at a gig.
