Summary
PEGS featured prominently in cartoons yesterday relating to the defection of Libyan former Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa. In one, an incandescent Muammar Gaddafi cries: "It gets worse. They've taken the tent pegs." In another a clothes peg is clipped firmly over the nostrils of UK Foreign Secretary William Hague, posing as an immigration officer, as Koussa passes with a suitcase full of rotting human remains. Between them, they sum up the UK's dilemma regarding their uninvited but not necessarily unwelcome guest.
Two things are now clear about the military situation in Libya. The rebels have neither the ammunition, the training, nor the organisation to pull off a decisive victory against the regime's better-drilled forces. Secondly, airpower alone never won a war and this one is no exception. A prolonged and messy stalemate, with further attacks on civilians, is now a real prospect unless the Gaddafi tent can be collapsed by mass defections.
