BOTH Andrew Doig and Donald Anderson are guilty of misrepresenting the position of the SSP on Scottish independence (Letters, October 12). The SSP, far from being a "totalitarian Trotskyist" party, is actually breaking new ground in its internal democracy and toleration of dissenting views. That's why platforms exist with many differing viewpoints - that is part of the difficult work of uniting the left.

The SSP's so-called "totalitarian" politics contrasts rather favourably with Mr Doig's party, the SNP. Since the Scottish Parliament elections in 1999 his party has lost three MSPs - Dorothy- Grace Elder, Lloyd Quinan and Margo MacDonald - who refused to toe the leadership line. They have also expelled Campbell Martin, MSP, for daring to have a mind of his own. They forced their leader, John Swinney, to resign in the teeth of backstairs manoeuvring that would not have been out of place in Mayor Daley's Chicago.
