WELL done James Brown in his letter (January 9) warning about the supplanting of Scottish words and usage with English ones. There are unfortunately countless examples of that to be found in our separate legal system.

I do not have the time to list all the wrong terms and names now creeping into the Scottish media but to start with, I would mention barristers (instead of our advocates), defendants (instead of defenders), entering a plea (instead of tendering a plea), counts of murder (instead of charges of murder), plaintiffs (instead of pursuers). Anyone involved in our threatened legal system could give numerous other examples.
