GEORGE Gershwin, who died in 1937 in Los Angeles aged 38 from an undiagnosed brain tumour ,was possibly the greatest of all America's composers of popular song. Greater than Berlin, Porter or Rogers - only Sondheim matches him when it comes to ambition, and even he cannot match Gershwin's gift for melody.
