THE rumbling bus takes me from the centre of Edinburgh on a southward trajectory. Beyond the city boundary, we are in attractive, rolling countryside heading towards Dalkeith, then further through the Esk Valley by way of old mining villages such as Lasswade, Loanhead and Bilston. Forty minutes after leaving the capital, I alight in Main Street, Roslin.

People, some with transatlantic accents, rush up to me in the street.
