Some days it is a cultural battlefield at the top of Renfield Street in Glasgow.

Assaulting the Herald's arts garret from the Pavilion Theatre, but also occasionally attacking from the flanks via Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and the Theatre Royal - and sometimes the Piping Centre to the rear - are the massed ranks of the Popular Culture Front. Equally dangerous is the aerial bombardment of the High Art squads deployed from the hall and theatre, in its opera house camouflage, as well as the associated guerillas beginning their fighting careers from the RSAMD. My strategy is to refuse to be partisan and take a long view of the conflict, because ultimately we are all on the same side. What is new and difficult to appreciate today inevitably nourishes and sustains the mainstream of tomorrow.
