Pressure from financial backers has played a major part in forcing amateur golf's existing governing bodies to draw up plans for an historic amalgamation later this year according to their officials.

Douglas Connon, the chairman of the Scottish Golf Union admitted yesterday that the need to maximise access to funding had been a key consideration in his organisation's decision to join forces with the Scottish Ladies' Golf Association.
