THE message might spring from another time, another place, when Glasgow Warriors confront the might of Toulouse in the Heineken Cup at Firhill tomorrow, but they may reflect that the best way of meeting the French giants head-on lies in tackling the men and not their reputations.

That lesson was delivered resoundingly when another Glasgow side, the Hawks of Old Anniesland, locked horns with Toulouse on a wintery February evening in 1998. The likes of the Newcastle duo, Sir John Hall and Rob Andrew, were watching from the stand, no doubt anticipating an easy victory for the visitors. Instead, a redoubtable Scottish contingent ran out 37-15 winners as the home forwards produced a wonderfully committed performance against opponents who arrived by private jet, but subsequently crashed to earth.
