A GROUP of armed, masked Iraqi men yesterday threatened to kill Abu Musab al Zarqawi if he did not immediately leave the country, accusing him of murdering innocent Iraqis and defiling the Muslim religion.

The threats against the Jordan-born militant, whose followers have been blamed for a spate of kidnappings, killings, and bombings, demonstrates the deep anger some Iraqis, including insurgent groups, feel towards foreign fighters, whom they consider as illegitimate a presence in Iraq as the 160,000 coalition troops.
