Summary
THE current debate on the role of the G8 summit in alleviating world poverty fails to take into consideration the nature of democracy. The famous Athenian democrat, Pericles, stated that "our democracy is like a tyranny to others". This is because democracy is expensive. To deliver the services we demand it is necessary for any government to secure profitable trade options whether by force or by inf luence. The reality is that a government which fails to do this will soon be voted out.
If we want our government and its business partners in the western world to tackle world poverty, then we have to be prepared to change our way of thinking. This would require a shift in values from consumerism to humanitarianism where a human-centred approach is taken; after all, the greatest pleasure is to be got from the company of good friends, not from computer games and plastic rubbish.See the full content of this document
