Summary
I write to add my full support to Dr Nina Baker's letter (July 23) suggesting that the City of Glasgow acquire the retiring HMS Glasgow as a floating museum/attraction. Cities in the UK that are accessible by sea and have a ship of the Royal Navy named after them are indeed privileged and although this latest (last?) HMS Glasgow was built on the Tyne I draw attention to the ship's motto: "Memor Es Tourum (Be mindful of your ancestors)". It is highly unlikely that there will be another HMS Glasgow after this (the eighth) for a very long time, if ever again.
I served 22 years in the Royal Navy including six months in HMS Glasgow in 1987, when she visited this fair city. For many reasons my six months serving in HMS Glasgow were memorable, but none more so than that particular visit, when we were warmly welcomed and royally entertained. The city council (or a suitable foresighted entrepreneur) could purchase the ship for a song. I would be more than happy to give any help or advice that may be needed to preserve this piece of Glasgow's maritime heritage.See the full content of this document
