Summary
I THANK John Swinney, MSP, for his kind words about Govan Law Centre's work but regret that he has chosen to be unjust about Scotland's legal system (February 10). No system is perfect, but John Swinney makes a number of irresponsible, unfounded assertions.
He complains that "sheriffs have dismissed cases because individuals did not have legal representation through no fault of their own". I don't believe this. Sheriffs don't dismiss cases because someone has no legal representation. The court will bend over backwards to assist a party litigant often to the inconvenience of other litigants. Has Mr Swinney ever considered that his constituents' cases might have been dismissed because they lacked merit?
