SO Tony Blair, once self-proclaimed "People's Premier", says that the Labour Party has to give up the "luxury of criticism". What criticism would that be, then? Surely no remarks about "cronyism" from the fawning ranks of the scrambling careerist parliamentary MPs to whom he is dishing out plum jobs like sweeties?

Helen Liddell, MP, redundant former secretary of state for Scotland? "Go on, pet, do just ease out of the way and give John Reid a good clear run at your constituency because his is disappearing. Be a dear and I'll give you a lovely sunny job in Australia, along with your MP's pension, your ministerial pension and now the high commissoner's salary and final pension. Sincere thanks for all your support. I don't forget my friends." And then there's Peter Mandelson's new job, of course. Salary (pounds) 145,000, plus additional allowances of (pounds) 31,000 for chauffeur, office and entertaining - and that pension at the end of it all, too. No, I doubt very much if Mr Mandelson will indulge in "the luxury of criticism".
