THE Tories last night demanded that Alan Milburn's (pounds) 72,000 salary for his new cabinet role as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster should be picked up by the Labour party and not the taxpayer.

The row came as Gordon Brown, the chancellor, broke his silence over the cabinet reshuffle, shrugging off the fact that his new ministerial colleague will be taking over the pivotal general election role he has usually enjoyed.
