EVEN on quiet days a good spy gives nothing away.

Through force of habit John le Carre is keeping stumm about his latest novel, the twentieth just delivered to his publishers in London. Not that le Carre is any longer a spook. As David Cornwell, his real name, he left the British intelligence service 43 years ago, although it was only in 1993, during a book tour, that he publicly admitted what everyone had always suspected. By then, he judged, it would have been coy to remain evasive about his ownership of the stealthy life-skill so manifest in his fiction.
