The Edinburgh Tram Project is one of Scotland's most complex and critical projects and as such clearly requires specialist advice "Beleaguered tram company has spent pound(s)20m hiring consultants", The Herald, January 10).

We are, however, extremely mindful of the public purse and in fact have repeated this fact over and over as part of the core rationale for the current dispute. It is for this reason that we have managed to halve the number of external consultants used within the last financial year, a fact that was made clear to your journalist Paul Hutcheon but which he neglected to disclose. In addition I think it is an important point that we have further reduced the total spend on external legal advice by almost 50%.
