I refer to your feature on the row over costs between Edinburgh tram contractors Bilfinger Berger and the body representing the city council, resulting in the lay-off by the former of 36 staff ("Trams contractor makes 75% of its staff redundant", The Herald, October 2).

Not for the first time, I suspect, taxpayers must be wondering whether further major expenditure will be a case of throwing good money after bad.
