Summary
While the conduct of the Americans running the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq is shocking, it should come as no surprise. The prevailing ethos of the US domestic penal system has merely been transplanted to Iraq.
Prisons in many parts of America are supported by the twin pillars of brutality and degradation. In many of these institutions the guards operate brutal regimes while also conniving at those acts of brutality which their charges inflict upon each other. Recently there was the scandal of a state penitentiary in California where guards forced prisoners to indulge in no-holds-barred, bare- knuckled fights for their entertainment with considerable sums wagered on the outcome.
