The first successful attempt at a video cassette recorder for the home came from Philips, in 1974. However, the Dutch company's machines were expensive and mostly bought by colleges, businesses and wealthy technology fans.

Sony, the Japanese electronics giant, keen to enter the home market, launched a format called Betamax in 1975. The first machine cost (pounds) 1000 - the equivalent of (pounds) 5200 today.
