ANNUAL UK inflation rose for the first time in five months in February - from 1.9per cent to the Bank of England's 2per cent target - amid signs that downward pressure on high street prices may be easing.

However, yesterday's inflation figures from National Statistics suggested no need for the Bank's monetary policy committee to change UK interest rates in either direction in the near term. The February inflation rate was bang in line with City expectations, after several months of surprising on the downside.
