THE number of young people arrested for underage drinking has trebled in Scotland since 1990, new figures have revealed.

A huge rise in binge drinking among under-18s has been blamed, prompting calls for a crackdown on unscrupulous licensees. Much of the increase has been attributed to proactive policing by the Strathclyde force, which recorded a 15-fold rise in the number of underage drinkers facing prosecution from 1990 until 2003.
