Iain Montgomery's letter states that Strathclyde Partnership for Transport's desire to move with the times in updating health and safety practices and shift patterns is nothing less than weasel words which, in fact, are designed to weaken both (Letters, April 19).

Unions and staff are notorious for resisting change, usually using health and safety as a pretext for protecting jobs and increasing wages. Presumably, Mr Montgomery has concerns for the proposal to use driverless trains. Such trains operate without problem in many of the world's major cities, Vancouver being a case in point where there are a number of lengthy routes including from the city to the airport. Modern technology is far more able to control complex signalling needs than humans.
