JOSE Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is the man who brought the Socialists back from the political wilderness and is now charged with trying to unite Spain after the worst terrorist attack in its history.

Mr Zapatero was considered an outsider to become prime minister of Spain until Thursday's bombing in Madrid, having angered many in the Socialist Party with his lack of aggression in the months after he took control in 2000 following a heavy electoral defeat.
