A TEAM of astronomers has discovered the earliest black holes that existed at the dawn of the universe.

Using the world's most powerful telescopes, astronomers have been peering further into space and back in time, to detect galaxies that existed when the universe was just a fraction of its estimated 13.7 billion years old. But finding the giant black holes thought to lurk at the centres of those galaxies has been much more difficult, experts said.
