Summary
I MUST take issue with my friend Major General Mark Strudwick when he claims that the large Scottish regiment is a "bold, forward- looking concept" (Letters, December 17). The plan that has eventually emerged from Secretary of State Hoon is one which will throw all the regiments of the British infantry into a period of unparalleled chaos. One look at the hundreds upon hundreds of cross postings that will be required across the whole spectrum of the infantry should be enough to make the chief of the general staff have nightmares every night until the proposal is completed - if it ever is. The degree of upheaval that regiments will experience will be such that there must be grave doubt about the effectiveness of the British infantry as an operational body over the period of the proposed "restructuring".
It is also interesting to hear that in fact there will still be 13 battalions conducting arms plot moves under these new plans, so proving that the whole concept was badly flawed right from the outset. The present battalions of Scottish infantry are highly flexible and effective fighting units that have never been found wanting no matter what challenge has been put theirway.See the full content of this document
